How do flatmates split subscriptions?

Flatmates already share rent, electricity and the internet bill. The plans on the living room screen, the music in the kitchen and the cloud storage for everyone’s photos are usually split too, just less tidily.

The bills that arrive once a quarter tend to get sorted. The small monthly ones are where flatmates lose track: one person pays for four plans, nobody is sure who owes what, and asking feels petty. Here is how to split them properly.

Which plans do flatmates usually share?

The ones the whole flat uses: films and shows on the shared screen, a music plan, cloud storage, and sometimes a game pass or an office suite.

Start by listing every plan anyone in the flat pays for, and who pays it. Most flats find at least one plan two people pay for separately, and one that a single flatmate has been covering for everyone.

Not every plan needs to be split. If only one flatmate uses something, it can stay theirs. Split the plans you would otherwise each pay for on your own.

Who pays for each plan?

One flatmate hosts each plan. They keep paying for it, and the rest of the flat pays them a share.

Spread the hosting around so no single flatmate is out of pocket for everything. If one of you hosts the films plan, another can host music.

On NeverSub each plan gets its own room, with its own seats and share. A flatmate can host one room and take a seat in the others, and the app shows each of them what they owe and to whom.

What house rules should flatmates agree?

Agree which profile is whose, which devices count, and what happens when someone moves out. Writing it down saves the awkward conversation later.

Each NeverSub room has optional house rules beside the required “What’s included”. A line like “one profile each, the shared screen counts as the flat’s” is enough.

Check the plan’s own terms too. Family and household plans often expect members to share an address, which flatmates usually do. Only share a plan whose terms cover the people you add.

How should flatmates pay each other?

Directly, the same way you already pay each other for rent or groceries. Mark the share as paid in the room, and the host confirms it.

NeverSub never touches the money and takes no fee. Members tap “I’ve paid” and add a reference if it helps, the host confirms, and the login unlocks.

Because the room shows the share before anyone takes a seat, nobody is surprised by the amount, and the split always adds back up to the plan price.

What happens when a flatmate moves out?

They leave the room, or the host removes them, and the seat opens up for whoever moves in next.

The room keeps the record of who paid while they lived there, so settling up on the way out is easy. Change the plan’s password once they have gone.

The new flatmate opens the invite link, signs in with their phone number and takes the open seat. Nothing else about the room has to change.
